Leonardo DiCaprio’s Sustainable Seafood Investment Is Great News!

We love seeing celebrities using their influence to promote great causes, so Millers were delighted by the recent news that Oscar-winning actor, Leonardo DiCaprio, has invested in a sustainable seafood company.

Clearly not content with bagging himself an Oscar, it’s great to see Leonardo making sure that both consumers and fisherman throughout the world recognise the importance of bagging themselves seafood from sustainable sources. Millers only uses seafood that comes from MSC certified sources.

Leonardo’s investment in LoveTheWild was inspired by his advocacy for environmental causes.

“Estimates show the earth’s population approaching nine billion by 2050, putting tremendous pressure on our natural food resources,” DiCaprio said in a statement.

“Seafood is a primary source of protein for nearly a billion people–but limate change, acidification and over fishing are putting increased pressure on our oceans’ natural stability.”

We recently took part in a sustainable seafood event as part of the MSC’s Fish and Kids Educational programme. This involved visiting local schools and speaking at assemblies; teaching the kids about the importance of MSC certified sustainable fishing in order to protect the future of our oceans.

We also got to talk about our incredible visit to the MSC Norwegian North East Arctic haddock fishery (we’re looking at returning to Norway very soon – so watch this space for more information on our next visit!)

Visiting schools was a great way to educate future generations about responsible and sustainable fishing. It was good to see how much the kids already knew about different species of fish, and school visits like these are a great way to teach the importance of sustainability.

The special appearance of the MSC’s very own Murdock the Fisherman’s Cat ensured everyone had a lot of fun too – even if we can’t keep him away from our fresh fish every time he visits the shop!
